What is play therapy?

Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate, evidence-based therapeutic approach designed for children and teens ages 4-18. Because play is the natural language of childhood, children can use it to express experiences, emotions, and inner worlds that they may not yet have the words to describe. Play therapy creates a safe, non-pressured space where healing can happen on the child’s own terms.

Play therapy clinician highlight:

As our resident Play Therapy clinical specialist, Nathalie brings a lot to the table. Before becoming a therapist, she spent years working as a preschool teacher and childcare provider. This gave her an understanding of child development that goes beyond a textbook definition. With this experience under her belt, she has a deep and intuitive understanding of how children actually think, communicate, and feel. Combined with her clinical training in play therapy and IFS, Nathalie’s background makes her a uniquely attuned therapist for young clients and their families.

Play therapy can help with:

Childhood anxiety & worry

Childhood behavioral challenges

Trauma and difficult life experiences

Family transitions (divorce, moves, new siblings)

Grief & loss

Social difficulties

Emotional dysregulation

Low self-esteem

How play therapy works:

In play therapy sessions at Resilient Parts, Nathalie integrates a variety of play-based tools to help children process difficult experiences and build emotional resilience. These include – but are not limited to – toys, sand trays, art, figurines, games, and expressive activities. She also integrates the IFS framework into her play therapy sessions, helping young clients begin to understand and befriend the different parts of themselves.
